Where Does The Doctor Go When He’s Sick?
Yesterday, I spoke with a former colleague from the rescue mission, Adam Casey, who is still employed there. He's one of the most humorous people I know. Typically, our discussions brim with clever humor, but they can swiftly shift to profound theological insights we're exploring. At times, the tone becomes solemn when he shares about the individuals he's presently assisting. Our latest conversation was entirely somber.
One of the guys in the program had taken his own life. I could hear in his voice that he was emotionally exhausted. He quickly tried to mask it by saying, “It’s going to be okay. Tomorrow will come and then next day after that. God is still in control.”
I wish such events were rare, but unfortunately, they're not. The rescue mission serves as a refuge for the most challenging cases from every agency in the city and beyond. Hospitals, mental health centers, and first responders turn to the mission when there's nowhere else for these individuals to go.
The team accommodates approximately 400 to 500 individuals nightly and serves over 4,000 to 5,000 people annually. As the city's population increases, these figures are consistently climbing. To the staff, these individuals are more than mere statistics; they recognize their names and narratives. They offer tailored solutions for each person's distinct challenges.
As these individuals confront their clients' challenges directly, it's equally important that they receive care. Keith Overholt, the president of the mission, likened to "Tony Stark" of rescue missions, has gathered a highly skilled team to aid the homeless in our community. Nonetheless, for the mission to function optimally, it's crucial that the staff maintain their spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being.
